Comparative case study is a qualitative research design in which two or more bounded cases are studied in depth and then systematically compared to identify similarities, differences, and patterns across contexts. Rooted in Yin's replication logic and Stake's multiple case framework, it is particularly suited to questions that ask how or why a phenomenon unfolds differently — or similarly — across distinct settings, populations, or time periods.

When to use it
Use comparative case study when the research question asks how or why a phenomenon operates across multiple distinct contexts — for example, how a policy is implemented differently across schools, how recovery unfolds in different health systems, or why innovation succeeds in some organisations and fails in others. It is appropriate when you need depth that surveys cannot supply and when studying more than one site is necessary to assess whether a finding is context-specific or generalisable across settings. Avoid it when resources allow only one case (use single-case study instead), when the phenomenon cannot be bounded into discrete cases, when statistical generalisation is the goal (use survey or experiment), or when the cases are too heterogeneous on dimensions unrelated to the research question, making comparison uninformative.

How many cases do I need for a comparative case study?
There is no universal minimum, but Yin recommends at least two cases to activate the replication logic. Many comparative studies use three to six cases — enough to identify patterns while still permitting thorough within-case analysis. More than six to eight cases shifts the design toward a qualitative survey unless analytic capacity is very large. The deciding criterion is theoretical saturation across cases, not a fixed number.
What is the difference between comparative case study and multiple case study?
The terms are closely related and often used interchangeably. 'Multiple case study' describes the structural feature (more than one case), while 'comparative case study' foregrounds the analytic aim of systematically comparing across cases. In practice, any multiple-case design that moves beyond simply describing cases side-by-side and instead analyses similarities and differences qualifies as comparative.
Can comparative case study include quantitative data?
Yes. Case studies are defined by their unit of analysis (the bounded case) and their analytic logic (replication and comparison), not by a restriction to qualitative data. Survey data, test scores, or administrative records can be incorporated within each case or used to compare cases, provided the analytic emphasis remains on understanding the case in context rather than on statistical inference.
How do I select cases without introducing bias?
Case selection should follow a transparent theoretical rationale before fieldwork begins. For literal replication, select cases predicted to show the same outcome; for theoretical replication, select cases predicted to show different outcomes for specified reasons. Document the selection logic in your methods section so readers can evaluate whether the comparison is principled.
Is comparative case study the same as qualitative comparative analysis (QCA)?
No. Qualitative comparative analysis (QCA) is a distinct technique developed by Charles Ragin that applies Boolean or fuzzy-set logic to systematically analyse configurations of conditions across cases. Comparative case study, as described by Yin and Stake, is a broader research design that may use various analytic strategies without the formal configurational logic of QCA.
