Comparative Constructivist Grounded Theory

Comparative Constructivist Grounded Theory combines Kathy Charmaz's constructivist strand of grounded theory with an explicit comparative design, deliberately collecting and analyzing data from two or more groups, settings, or time points to build a theory that accounts for variation and similarity across contexts. The constructivist perspective treats categories and theory as co-constructed between researcher and participants rather than discovered objectively from data.

When to use it
Use Comparative Constructivist Grounded Theory when you want to build a substantive theory about a social process and you have reason to believe the process operates differently across groups, contexts, or settings — and that understanding those differences is theoretically important. It is well-suited to research questions of the form 'how does X differ between populations A and B, and why?' Minimum viable conditions: at least two meaningfully distinct comparison units; access to rich text data (interviews, field notes) from each unit; a research goal of theory generation rather than description only. Do not use this approach when you already have a well-developed theory to test (use deductive designs instead), when your sample is homogeneous and comparison adds no analytic leverage, or when resources allow only superficial data collection from each unit — shallow comparative data produces superficial theory.

Plain constructivist grounded theory (Charmaz) is usually conducted in a single setting or with a relatively homogeneous participant group. The comparative variant deliberately samples across two or more distinct groups or sites from the start, with the explicit goal of building a theory that can account for both commonalities and variations across those contexts. The analytic logic is the same, but constant comparison is applied both within and between units.
How many comparison units do I need?
Two is the minimum for a meaningful comparison. More units strengthen the theoretical range, but also multiply the data management burden. The number of units should be driven by theoretical logic — include contexts that are likely to produce conceptually important variation — rather than by a fixed rule.
Can I combine this with a theoretical framework before data collection?
Constructivist grounded theory advises using existing concepts as sensitizing frameworks to orient initial sampling and questioning, but not as fixed hypotheses to confirm. You can enter the field aware of relevant theory; what matters is that you remain open to categories emerging from data rather than forcing data into predetermined boxes.
How do I know when I have reached theoretical saturation in a comparative design?
Saturation is reached when additional data from any comparison unit no longer generate new categories or meaningfully modify existing ones, and when the relationships between categories are well-developed and consistently supported. In a comparative design, saturation must be assessed within each unit and in the cross-unit comparison — saturation in one unit does not imply saturation overall.
Is it acceptable to use software like NVivo for the comparative analysis?
Yes — qualitative data management tools such as NVivo, ATLAS.ti, or MAXQDA can facilitate organizing codes and categories across multiple comparison units and support visual displays of cross-unit patterns. However, the intellectual work of comparison — judging which similarities and differences are theoretically meaningful — remains the researcher's task.
