Multiple Case-Based Constructivist Grounded Theory

Multiple case-based constructivist grounded theory (CGT) combines Kathy Charmaz's constructivist grounded theory framework with a deliberate multi-case design. The researcher collects and analyzes data from two or more purposively selected cases simultaneously, applying iterative coding, constant comparison, and theoretical sampling across cases to build a grounded theory that accounts for both within-case depth and cross-case variation. The resulting theory is understood as jointly constructed by researcher and participants rather than objectively discovered.

When to use it
Use this design when you want to build a grounded theory with broader conceptual reach than a single-site study allows, and when cross-case comparison is theoretically important. It suits questions about social processes that operate across different contexts — for example, how organizations adapt to the same policy change, or how individuals from different communities navigate a shared life transition. It requires access to multiple sites or participant populations and sufficient time for in-depth data collection and iterative analysis across cases. Do not use it when you have access to only one site, when rich within-case depth matters more than cross-case breadth, or when the research question calls for statistical comparison rather than theory building.

How is this different from a standard multiple case study?
A multiple case study (Yin's tradition) aims to describe, explain, or compare cases in their particularity, and cross-case synthesis is typically the final analytic step. Multiple case-based CGT uses cases instrumentally throughout the study: cases are selected and revisited to refine an emerging theory, not to produce stand-alone case narratives. The goal is a substantive theory grounded in data from all cases, not a comparative case description.
How many cases is appropriate?
Two to six cases is the practical range most often cited. Too few cases (one) collapses the design into standard single-site CGT; too many (more than six) makes the in-depth engagement and iterative constant comparison across cases unmanageable for most research teams. Theoretical rather than statistical logic drives case count: add cases until theoretical saturation is reached.
What makes this 'constructivist' as opposed to classic grounded theory?
Classic (Glaserian) grounded theory assumes an objective reality that the researcher discovers through systematic data analysis. Charmaz's constructivist version holds that categories and theories are co-constructed through the interaction between researcher and participants; the researcher's positionality, assumptions, and relationships shape the analysis. This requires explicit reflexivity and a more tentative, interpretive voice in reporting.
Can I use NVivo or Atlas.ti for the analysis?
Yes. Qualitative data analysis software helps organize large volumes of coded data across multiple cases and supports memo-writing and code mapping. However, the intellectual work — deciding what a code means, why categories relate, whether saturation has been reached — remains the researcher's responsibility. Software facilitates management; it does not perform the iterative theoretical reasoning that grounds the theory.
How do I know when I have reached theoretical saturation across cases?
Theoretical saturation is reached when new data from any case no longer produce new codes or modify existing categories. In a multi-case design this bar is higher than in single-site studies because the researcher must be satisfied that the theory holds across the range of cases collected, not just within one. Systematic negative case analysis — actively seeking disconfirming instances — is the most rigorous way to test saturation.
