Comparative grounded theory applies the systematic inductive logic of grounded theory across two or more distinct groups, settings, or time points. Rather than generating a theory grounded in a single context, it builds theory that explains variation and similarity across contexts, producing conceptually richer and more transferable explanatory frameworks than single-site grounded theory studies.

When to use it
Use comparative grounded theory when you want to generate a theory about a process or phenomenon that you suspect plays out differently across groups (e.g., professions, cultures, organisations) or contexts (e.g., high-resource vs low-resource settings) and there is insufficient existing theory to guide a deductive study. It is well suited to management, health sciences, education, and sociology when the research question starts with 'how' or 'what explains the difference between…'. Do not use it when a single well-defined context is all that is available and comparison is forced rather than theoretically motivated; when the research goal is thick description of one group's experience (use standard grounded theory or ethnography); or when you need statistical generalisability (use survey or experimental designs). A minimum of two meaningfully different sites or groups is required, and each site must yield sufficient data to reach theoretical saturation independently.

- Managing simultaneous theoretical sampling across sites requires careful coordination; premature closure of sampling in one site can leave theoretical gaps.
- The resulting theory may sacrifice depth of contextual description for breadth of comparison — the richness of each site's particulars can be thinned in the move to cross-site abstraction.
- Risk of implicit reductionism: forcing conceptually incomparable contexts into a shared categorical scheme can distort rather than illuminate differences.

How is comparative grounded theory different from standard grounded theory?
Standard grounded theory generates a theory grounded in data from a single context or group. Comparative grounded theory applies the same inductive, iterative logic but deliberately collects and codes data from two or more contexts simultaneously, using cross-site comparison as an additional analytic lever to identify the conditions under which a process unfolds differently. The resulting theory explains variation, not just the process itself.
How many sites or groups do I need?
A minimum of two sites is necessary to call the design comparative, but the number should be driven by theoretical need: you need enough diversity across sites to saturate the key categories and their properties. In practice, two to five sites is common. The criterion is theoretical saturation within and across sites, not a fixed number.
Can I use constructivist grounded theory in a comparative design?
Yes. Constructivist grounded theory (Charmaz, 2014) is fully compatible with comparative designs. The constructivist orientation adds attention to how meaning is co-constructed in each site, which can itself become a source of comparative insight — particularly when sites differ culturally or linguistically.
Does comparative grounded theory require the same data type at every site?
Not strictly, but consistency strengthens cross-site comparisons. Using the same primary data source (e.g., semi-structured interviews) at each site makes conceptual comparison more defensible. If data types differ across sites (e.g., interviews at one site, documents at another), the researcher must be transparent about what each data type can and cannot reveal about the categories being developed.
When should I stop collecting data?
When theoretical saturation is reached — that is, when additional data from any site are no longer producing new properties, dimensions, or relationships for the core categories. Saturation must be assessed for each category independently across all sites, not just within one site.
