Participatory Multiple Case Study — Collaborative Multi-Case Inquiry

Participatory multiple case study research integrates the structured logic of multiple case study design — examining two or more bounded cases to build analytic generalisations — with the collaborative ethics of participatory research, where community members or practitioners co-design the inquiry, co-collect data, and co-interpret findings. The approach combines Yin's replication logic across cases with the emancipatory and co-ownership principles that define participatory action research traditions.

When to use it

Use participatory multiple case study when: (a) the research question requires understanding how a phenomenon unfolds across two or more distinct bounded contexts; (b) community or practitioner co-ownership of the research process and findings is ethically or practically important; and (c) you want to build analytic generalisations that are grounded in multiple sites rather than a single context. It is particularly well suited to community health, education reform, social policy evaluation, and organisational development. Do NOT use it when a single deep case is sufficient; when the study timeline or resources cannot support multi-site participatory engagement; when community members lack time or interest to participate in sustained co-research; or when the goal is statistical generalisation — survey or experimental designs are more appropriate in those circumstances.

Strengths & limitations

Strengths
  • Analytic generalisations are more robust than single-case findings because patterns must hold — or be meaningfully explained — across multiple cases.
  • Co-produced data are typically richer and more contextually accurate because participants understand their own settings better than external researchers.
  • Community co-ownership increases the likelihood that findings influence local practice and policy rather than remaining in academic journals.
  • The replication logic makes it possible to identify boundary conditions — specifying under which contextual circumstances a phenomenon does or does not appear.
  • The participatory layer strengthens research ethics, especially in studies involving marginalised or vulnerable populations.
Limitations
  • Coordinating participation across multiple sites is logistically demanding and time-consuming; the added complexity relative to single-case study is substantial.
  • Achieving genuine co-design and co-analysis requires sustained relationship-building; superficial participation undermines both the ethical and epistemic benefits.
  • Cross-case comparison can flatten important within-case complexity if the analytic focus shifts too quickly to common patterns.
  • Power asymmetries between academic researchers and community participants can persist even with participatory intent, skewing what questions get prioritised.

Frequently asked

How is this different from a standard multiple case study?

The research design and cross-case logic are essentially the same as in Yin's multiple case study: purposive case selection, within-case data collection, and systematic cross-case comparison to build analytic generalisations. The difference is the participatory layer: in a standard multiple case study the researcher is the sole architect of the inquiry; here, community or organisational members co-design the study, contribute to data collection, and validate interpretations. This co-ownership changes the ethics, the data quality, and the likelihood that findings will be used.

How many cases do I need?

Yin recommends a minimum of two cases for literal replication and suggests that four to six cases are often needed for robust theoretical replication. The participatory dimension adds a practical constraint: each additional site requires sustained relationship-building and co-analysis work, so most studies balance analytical ambition against the capacity of all participating communities.

Can participatory approaches compromise the rigour of case study analysis?

Not if the design is well-structured. The cross-case replication logic provides analytic rigour; the participatory layer adds contextual validity. Tensions can arise when community priorities pull analysis away from the original research question, but a well-negotiated co-design phase — where the research question and governance procedures are agreed upfront — manages this. Member validation can actually strengthen rather than compromise quality by correcting researcher misinterpretations.

What data collection methods are typical?

Methods are chosen collaboratively and reflect the skills and preferences of community participants. Common choices include semi-structured interviews conducted by trained community co-researchers, focus groups, participant observation, photovoice, community mapping, and document analysis. The participatory principle is that methods should be accessible to community members as data collectors and analysts, not just as subjects.

Is the design suitable for cross-national or cross-cultural comparisons?

Yes, and it is particularly well-suited to such contexts because the participatory framework ensures that local knowledge shapes how phenomena are understood in each cultural context. Cross-cultural member validation is especially important: a pattern that seems universal to an external researcher may be interpreted very differently by participants in different national or cultural contexts.
