Comparative Classic Grounded Theory

Comparative classic grounded theory is a qualitative research design that applies Glaser and Strauss's original Glaserian grounded theory procedures across two or more deliberately selected comparison groups, settings, or time points. The constant comparative method — the analytical engine of classic GT — is extended systematically across sites so that the emerging substantive theory accounts for variation in the phenomenon across different contexts, populations, or conditions.

When to use it
Use comparative classic grounded theory when you want to generate a substantive theory about a social or psychological process that operates across more than one context, group, or setting, and when existing theory is absent or insufficient. It is especially appropriate when you suspect the phenomenon varies meaningfully between groups — professional cultures, organisational types, cultural communities — and you want the theory to reflect that variation. It is not appropriate when a theory already exists that could be tested with a deductive design, when the research goal is to describe a single bounded case (use case study instead), when you need statistical prevalence data, or when only one homogeneous group is available and cross-group comparison adds nothing.

How is comparative classic GT different from comparative Straussian GT?
The difference lies in analytic procedure and epistemological stance. Classic (Glaserian) GT uses open and selective coding and strongly resists imposing pre-existing frameworks; theory is expected to emerge inductively. Straussian GT uses a more prescribed coding paradigm (open, axial, selective) and is more permissive of researcher-directed structure. In a comparative design, both extend across multiple groups, but classic GT insists even more strongly that group comparisons must serve emergent theory rather than test pre-specified propositions.
How many comparison groups do I need?
A minimum of two groups is required; more is possible but demands substantially more resources. The critical criterion is not the number of groups but whether the groups vary on dimensions that are theoretically meaningful for the phenomenon under study. Two strategically chosen, contrasting groups often yield richer theoretical insight than five superficially different groups.
Do I need to complete data collection in one group before starting in another?
No. Classic GT's logic calls for simultaneous iteration between data collection and analysis. You may begin in one group, code early data, develop initial categories, then move to the second group to test whether those categories hold, return to the first group to sample for gaps, and so on. The sequence is driven by theoretical need, not logistical tidiness.
When does the literature review happen in classic GT?
In the Glaserian tradition, a full literature review is deliberately deferred until the core categories have emerged, so that prior theory does not contaminate the inductive process. Researchers may conduct a brief initial scan to establish that no adequate theory already exists, but the substantive literature engagement comes after — and informs — the emerging theory rather than preceding it.
Is comparative classic GT suitable for small teams or solo researchers?
It can be conducted by a solo researcher, but the multi-site nature makes it time-intensive. Solo researchers should be conservative about the number of comparison groups and plan for longer fieldwork timelines. The memo-writing discipline is especially critical when there is no co-analyst to challenge emerging interpretations.
