It suits teacher-researcher collaborations in humanities, social sciences, language arts, or other interpretive disciplines where context shapes meaning. Use it when you have at least two distinct teacher teams willing to co-plan and co-observe, and when the study spans a full lesson cycle (weeks to months). Do NOT use it when only one site is available (standard lesson study suffices), when the research goal is large-scale statistical generalization (use quasi-experimental or survey designs instead), or when teachers lack sufficient release time and institutional support for collaborative observation and debrief.

However, video is supplementary to — not a replacement for — live observation with structured data-collection sheets.
Is multiple-case lesson study a form of action research?
There is overlap: both involve practitioners as researchers and aim at improving practice. However, action research typically centers on a practitioner's own problem in their own context, whereas multiple-case lesson study coordinates a shared research question across sites and emphasizes structured observation of a jointly designed lesson. Lesson study is generally more tightly structured around the research lesson artifact and more explicitly comparative.
