Evaluatie van screeningsinstrumenten is een systematische epidemiologische benadering om te beoordelen of een instrument of programma een aandoening nauwkeurig en kosteneffectief kan identificeren bij individuen voordat symptomen optreden. Het kwantificeert diagnostische prestatiecijfers — sensitiviteit, specificiteit, predictieve waarden en de ROC-curve — en evalueert of een screeningsprogramma voldoet aan vastgestelde criteria voor volksgezondheid voor adoptie en een balans tussen schade en voordeel.
