Temporālā kopienu noteikšana identificē saliedētas grupas (kopienas) tīklos, kuru struktūra laika gaitā mainās. Katru laika momentuzņēmumu apstrādājot kā tīkla slāni un savienojot secīgus slāņus, tā atklāj, kā kopienas veidojas, apvienojas, sadalās, aug vai izzūd — pārvēršot statisku momentuzņēmumu secību nepārtrauktā grupu evolūcijas stāstījumā.
