הטעיה ומתן דיווח מחודש במחקר

הטעיה במחקר – השמטת מידע על הליכי המחקר, השערותיו או מטרתו האמיתית – מותרת מבחינה אתית בנסיבות מוגבלות כאשר קריטריונים ספציפיים מתקיימים. המסגרת הרגולטורית (45 CFR 46.116(a)(5) בארה"ב; קוד האתיקה של ה-APA סעיף 8.07) מתירה הטעיה אם: (1) לא ניתן באופן סביר לערוך את המחקר ללא הטעיה, (2) ההטעיה אינה כרוכה בסיכונים גדולים מ'סיכון מינימלי', ו-(3) המשתתפים מקבלים גילוי מלא והזדמנות למשוך את נתוניהם לאחר מתן דיווח מחודש. הטעיה נפוצה במיוחד במחקר חברתי והתנהגותי (חקר דעות קדומות, קונפורמיות, קבלת החלטות אתית) שבהם מודעות להשערה האמיתית תשנה באופן יסודי את ההתנהגות. הבנה מתי הטעיה מוצדקת וכיצד ליישמה באופן אתי חיונית לחוקרי התנהגות.
