ระเบียบวิธีสังเคราะห์หน่วยควบคุม (SCM) ซึ่งนำเสนอโดย Abadie, Diamond และ Hainmueller ในปี 2010 ได้สร้างกลุ่มเปรียบเทียบเสมือน (counterfactual) ที่ถ่วงน้ำหนักสำหรับหน่วยที่ได้รับการปฏิบัติการเพียงหน่วยเดียวจากกลุ่มหน่วยที่ไม่ได้รับการปฏิบัติการ (donor units) ระเบียบวิธีนี้ได้รับการยอมรับอย่างกว้างขวางว่าเป็นมาตรฐานสูงสุด (gold standard) ในการประเมินผลการแทรกแซงนโยบายขนาดใหญ่ การทดลองตามธรรมชาติ และการศึกษากรณี N=1 ที่ไม่มีหน่วยเปรียบเทียบที่ชัดเจน
