ORESTE (Organisation, Rangement Et Synthèse de données rElaTionnEllEs) is a ranking multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) method introduced by Roubens, M. in 1982. It turns a decision matrix of alternatives scored on multiple criteria into a structured, reproducible result.

When to use it

d(a_i) ≥ 0. Lower d means closer to the ideal reference. ORESTE uses ordinal criterion importance ranks rather than cardinal weights — easier to elicit from decision-makers. The threshold δ controls indifference/incomparability: large δ → more alternatives declared indifferent.

Strengths & limitations

  • Follows a transparent, reproducible computational procedure that can be audited step by step.
  • Handles multiple criteria of differing scales and units within a single decision matrix.
Limitations
  • Results depend on the chosen normalisation, weights, and parameter settings.
