ELECTRE-III (ELECTRE III — ELimination Et Choix Traduisant la REalité III (pseudo-criteria, fuzzy outranking)) is a ranking multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) method introduced by Roy, B. in 1978. It turns a decision matrix of alternatives scored on multiple criteria into a structured, reproducible result.

ELECTRE-III

When to use it

ELECTRE III uses pseudo-criteria (with q, p, v thresholds per criterion) instead of binary true/false concordance, producing a fuzzy outranking relation. The credibility matrix σ is then used in a two-pass distillation to produce a complete ranking. It is more discriminating than ELECTRE II but requires more parameter elicitation.

Strengths & limitations

Strengths
  • Follows a transparent, reproducible computational procedure that can be audited step by step.
  • Handles multiple criteria of differing scales and units within a single decision matrix.
Limitations
  • May exhibit rank reversal when alternatives are added to or removed from the set.
