ELECTRE IV — ELimination Et Choix Traduisant la REalité IV (no criterion weights)

ELECTRE-IV (ELECTRE IV — ELimination Et Choix Traduisant la REalité IV (no criterion weights)) is a ranking multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) method introduced by Roy, B., Hugonnard, J. C. in 1982. It turns a decision matrix of alternatives scored on multiple criteria into a structured, reproducible result.

ELECTRE-IV

When to use it

ELECTRE IV is specifically designed for situations where criterion weights cannot be defined (equal importance assumed, but only ordinal thresholds). It uses four levels of outranking (from strict to lenient) to build a complete ranking. The absence of weights makes it more democratic but less flexible.

Strengths & limitations

Strengths
  • Follows a transparent, reproducible computational procedure that can be audited step by step.
  • Handles multiple criteria of differing scales and units within a single decision matrix.
Limitations
  • May exhibit rank reversal when alternatives are added to or removed from the set.
