디지털 근거 이론은 소셜 미디어 플랫폼, 포럼, 블로그, 댓글 섹션 및 기타 인터넷 매개 커뮤니케이션에서 수집된 데이터에 근거 이론의 체계적인 귀납적 논리를 적용합니다. 단순히 디지털 소스에서 나온 텍스트에 근거 이론을 사용하는 것이 아니라, 경험적 자료에 근거한 이론 생성을 핵심적으로 약속하면서 온라인 데이터의 특정 가능성과 제약을 수용하도록 표본 추출, 수집 및 윤리 절차를 조정하는 것을 포함합니다.
