原著論文は、ある学術分野における新しい経験的発見を報告するための主要な媒体である。IMRaD構造（序論、方法、結果、考察）に従い、研究者の新規なデータ、分析、解釈を表す。学術雑誌の記事形式は、1665年の王立協会紀要（Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society）の創刊以来、科学的コミュニケーションのゴールドスタンダードとなっている。
