Remote Survey Data Collection · Also known as: distance survey, self-administered remote questionnaire, remote questionnaire, distributed survey

A remote survey is a structured data collection method in which respondents complete a questionnaire without the researcher being physically present. Delivered via mail, telephone, email, web platforms, or mobile apps, it enables researchers to reach geographically dispersed samples at relatively low cost. The method is central to social-science, public-health, and organisational research and is codified in Dillman's widely used Tailored Design Method.

When to use it

Use a remote survey when the research goal is to describe attitudes, behaviours, or characteristics across a geographically dispersed population and when standardised, comparable measurement across respondents is needed. It is well suited to medium-to-large samples (n > 50) where face-to-face contact is impractical or too costly. It is particularly valuable when sensitive topics require respondent anonymity. Do NOT use it when the research question requires probing, follow-up, or context-rich explanation — a semi-structured interview is more appropriate. Avoid it when the target population has low literacy, unreliable internet access, or strong aversion to self-completion instruments, as non-response will be severe and biased.

Strengths
  • Reaches geographically dispersed samples that would be prohibitively expensive to contact in person.
  • Standardised instrument ensures every respondent answers identical questions, supporting comparability and statistical aggregation.
  • Respondent anonymity tends to produce more candid answers on sensitive topics than face-to-face methods.
  • Web-based delivery allows automatic data capture, skip logic, and real-time response-rate monitoring at low marginal cost.
  • Respondents can complete the survey at their own pace, reducing time pressure that affects response quality.
Limitations
  • Cannot probe or clarify ambiguous responses — question wording must be unambiguous without interviewer assistance.
  • Non-response bias is a persistent threat: those who respond may differ systematically from those who do not.
  • Requires a reliable contact list (sampling frame); populations without email or stable postal addresses are difficult to reach.
  • Cannot verify who actually completed the survey, creating identity and multiple-response risks in online panels.
  • Open-ended responses tend to be shorter and less elaborated than those produced in face-to-face or telephone interviews.

What response rate is acceptable for a remote survey?

There is no universal threshold, but response rates below 30 % are widely considered problematic because they substantially increase non-response bias risk. AAPOR reporting standards require the rate to be calculated and disclosed regardless of its level. A non-response bias analysis — comparing respondents and non-respondents on available frame variables, or comparing early and late respondents — is more informative than the response rate alone.

How is a remote survey different from an online survey?

An online survey is one specific channel within the broader category of remote surveys. Remote surveys also include postal mail surveys, interactive voice-response phone surveys, and SMS-based questionnaires. The defining feature of all remote surveys is researcher absence during completion, not the delivery medium.

Should I use a single mode or multiple modes?

Mixed-mode designs — for example, inviting via email and following up with a paper copy — tend to produce higher response rates and reduce coverage error when some respondents lack internet access. However, mode effects (differences in how respondents answer the same question in different modes) must be assessed and, where possible, minimised through careful design of the common instrument.

How many reminders should I send?

Dillman's Tailored Design Method recommends a sequence of contacts: an advance notice, the initial invitation, a thank-you or reminder one week later, and a final reminder two to four weeks after the initial invite. Two to three follow-up contacts typically capture the large majority of eventual respondents. Beyond three reminders, marginal gains are small and respondent goodwill may erode.

Can remote surveys handle sensitive topics?

Yes — self-administered remote surveys generally reduce social-desirability bias compared to interviewer-administered methods because respondents feel less observed. Guarantees of anonymity or confidentiality should be explicit in the cover communication and the instrument itself.
