项目功能差异分析旨在检验来自不同群体（例如性别、种族或语言背景）但具有相同潜在能力水平的考生，是否会对某项测试题目做出不同的反应。该方法由 Holland 和 Thayer 于 1988 年通过 Mantel-Haenszel 程序首次正式提出，是现代测验开发中用于检测和剔除项目偏误的主要工具。
