การถดถอยพหุนามเป็นวิธีการถดถอยที่สร้างแบบจำลองความสัมพันธ์ที่ไม่เป็นเชิงเส้นโดยการรวมเทอมกำลังสองและกำลังที่สูงขึ้นของตัวแปรอธิบาย และเป็นเครื่องมือหลักของการวิเคราะห์พื้นผิวการตอบสนอง ดังที่พัฒนาขึ้นในหนังสือ Introduction to Linear Regression Analysis ของ Montgomery, Peck และ Vining (2012) ยังคงเป็นเชิงเส้นในพารามิเตอร์ แม้ว่าเส้นโค้งที่ปรับพอดีจะโค้งงอ
