การพัฒนามาตรวัดแบบหลายประเภท (polytomous scale development) คือกระบวนการสร้างและตรวจสอบความตรงเชิงประจักษ์ของเครื่องมือวัดที่มีข้อคำถามซึ่งมีตัวเลือกการตอบตั้งแต่สามประเภทขึ้นไป โดยเรียงลำดับอย่างมีความหมาย เช่น มาตรวัดแบบลิเคิร์ท (Likert-type), มาตรวัดแบบให้คะแนน (rating), หรือข้อคำถามแบบให้คะแนนบางส่วน (partial-credit items) วิธีการนี้ประยุกต์ใช้แบบจำลองทฤษฎีการตอบสนองข้อสอบแบบหลายประเภท (polytomous item response theory models) หรือวิธีการวิเคราะห์ปัจจัยเชิงอันดับ (ordinal factor analysis) เพื่อประเมินคุณภาพข้อคำถาม ประมาณค่าระดับคุณลักษณะแฝง และสร้างมาตรวัดที่มีความเที่ยงตรงทางจิตวิทยา (psychometrically sound scale).
