다층 사회 연결망 분석은 행위자들이 우정, 전문적 협력, 온라인 상호작용 등 여러 유형의 관계를 동시에 맺는 상황으로 고전적인 단일층 연결망 방법을 확장한 것이다. 각 관계 유형을 별도의 층으로 모델링하고 층 간의 연결을 명시적으로 표현함으로써, 단일 통합 연결망에서는 숨겨질 수 있는 구조적 복잡성을 포착한다.
