Sport Confidence Inventory (SCI)
Also known as: SCI, Trait Sport Confidence
The SCI is a 13-item questionnaire measuring general, trait-level confidence in sport ability—the athlete's habitual belief in their capability to execute skills and perform well in their sport. Developed by Vealey in 1986, the SCI is one of the most widely used instruments for assessing athlete self-confidence and predicting competitive success and psychological wellbeing.

When to use it
Pre-season psychological assessment: Identify athletes with low sport confidence who need confidence-building interventions (skill-focused training, positive coaching feedback, incremental challenge). Competitive readiness monitoring: Athletes with declining SCI across season warrant intervention (may indicate skill stagnation, coaching mismatch, or external stress). Research on confidence–performance relationships; meta-analysis of confidence effects on athletic success. Sport psychology intervention evaluation: Measure SCI before and after confidence-building interventions (imagery, self-talk, mastery experiences) to quantify effectiveness. Talent development and athlete recruitment: Programs use SCI to identify athletes with both capability and confidence—high ability + low confidence requires confidence coaching; high confidence with lower ability warrants skill development. Return-to-sport psychology: Post-injury athletes' SCI often declines; tracking SCI recovery during rehabilitation indicates psychological readiness for return-to-competition.

- Practical brevity: 13 items, <3 minutes—efficient for coaches, organizations, and researchers; can be administered frequently for trend monitoring.
- Intervention-sensitive: SCI is responsive to coaching, skill development, and psychological interventions; changes in SCI reflect real improvements in athlete self-regard and psychological readiness.
- Developmentally relevant: Valid across youth, collegiate, and professional athletes; norms available for different age and competitive levels.
- Confounding with actual ability: High SCI reflects not just confident beliefs but also likely genuine ability/competence. SCI cannot distinguish overconfidence (unjustified confidence) from justified confidence (ability-matched). Assess actual skill/performance alongside SCI for full picture.
- Social desirability bias: Athletes may overestimate confidence ('I should be confident') or underestimate ('I don't want to seem arrogant'). Emphasize anonymous, honest responding and explain that accurate confidence helps coaches provide appropriate support.
- Trait-only measurement: SCI does not capture situation-specific confidence variations (an athlete might have high trait confidence but low confidence before facing a rival). Supplement with state-confidence (CSAI-2 self-confidence subscale) for competition-specific assessment.
- Culture and gender variation: Confidence expression norms vary across cultures; some cultures emphasize humility (which might suppress SCI scores); some genders experience confidence/competence bias (girls may underestimate confidence relative to boys with equal ability). Interpret cautiously and use diverse norms.
- Directional causality unclear: Does high confidence cause good performance, or does good performance build confidence? Longitudinal studies with lagged designs help clarify temporal relationships.

How is SCI different from CSAI-2 Self-Confidence subscale?
SCI measures trait (general, habitual) sport confidence—'In general, how confident are you in your sport ability?' CSAI-2 Self-Confidence measures state confidence—'Right now, before this competition, how confident do you feel?' Both are useful: SCI predicts overall performance trajectory and resilience; CSAI-2 state confidence varies before each competition and reflects immediate readiness. High SCI with low pre-competition CSAI-2 is normal (generally confident but nervous about a specific high-stakes event). Track both.
Can I improve SCI quickly?
SCI is a stable trait but is responsive to coaching and success experiences. Quick, artificial boosts through positive self-talk without corresponding skill development are ineffective and damage credibility. Realistic confidence improvement takes 4–12 weeks and requires: (1) actual skill improvement (training focus), (2) positive coaching feedback, (3) incremental competitive challenge, and (4) success experiences. SCI reflects genuine capability; build from real improvement.
What if my athlete has very high SCI but low actual ability?
This is overconfidence (unjustified confidence) and is less common but problematic. The athlete will face inevitable failure when competing against higher-ability opponents, leading to confidence crash and potential depression. Address directly: 'Your confidence is great, but let's honestly assess your current skill level relative to your competition. Here's where you need improvement to match your confidence. We can work on this together.' Pair confidence with realistic skill development.
Does SCI predict injury?
SCI does not directly predict injury risk. However, athletes with very high SCI (>100) sometimes overestimate recovery from injury or push too hard in rehabilitation, increasing re-injury risk. Conversely, low SCI may lead to fear-avoidance in rehabilitation, slowing recovery. Monitor SCI in injured athletes: realistic confidence throughout rehabilitation is healthy; overconfidence or loss of confidence both warrant attention.
My athlete's SCI dropped significantly after a loss. Should I be concerned?
Single-game losses temporarily affect state-confidence but should not dramatically shift trait SCI (measured by SCI, which assesses general confidence). If SCI drops significantly (e.g., from 85 to 60) after one or two losses, investigate: Is the athlete ruminating? Are there underlying stressors? Are there genuine skill gaps revealed? A single loss shouldn't cause major trait shift; significant drops indicate something deeper warrants exploration.
How do I build confidence in young athletes without creating entitlement?
Build confidence through earned mastery: Provide age-appropriate skill development, celebrate genuine effort and improvement ('You worked hard and it paid off'), and present incremental challenges the athlete can succeed at. Distinguish confidence (earned belief in ability through experience) from entitlement (expectation of success without effort). Confidence says 'I can do this because I've practiced and improved'; entitlement says 'I should win because I'm me.' Tie confidence to effort and improvement, not innate talent.
