Qualitative-Dominant Exploratory Sequential Mixed Methods Design

This design begins with a substantive qualitative phase (QUAL) that drives the study, followed by a smaller quantitative phase (quan) used to test, refine, or extend qualitative findings to a broader sample. The qualitative strand holds priority in both scope and interpretation; the quantitative strand serves a confirmatory or generalisability function. It is particularly well suited when theory or instrument development must be grounded in participants' own frameworks before statistical testing.

When to use it
Use this design when the phenomenon is insufficiently understood to impose pre-existing variables or instruments, when you need to build or validate a culturally grounded measurement tool, or when the conceptual framework must emerge from participants before quantitative testing. It is appropriate when a qualitative tradition is the theoretical engine and quantitative data are needed only to assess scope or prevalence. Do NOT use it when both strands are intended to carry equal weight — use concurrent triangulation or equal-weight designs instead. Avoid it when resources do not allow two genuinely separate phases, as the sequential structure demands sufficient time and funding for both.

This priority difference shapes sampling rationale, resource allocation, and how findings are framed.
Can I choose any qualitative tradition for the first phase?
Yes — grounded theory, phenomenology, thematic analysis, narrative inquiry, or another tradition appropriate to the research question can anchor the dominant phase. The choice shapes the analytic products of phase one and therefore what gets operationalised in the instrument-building step. The tradition must be selected purposively and applied with fidelity to its own methodological conventions.
What sample sizes are typical for each phase?
The qualitative phase typically involves 10–40 participants selected purposively for depth and variation. The quantitative phase sample size should be determined by a power analysis for the planned statistical procedure; a minimum of 100–200 participants is common for survey validation, though this varies with instrument complexity and expected effect sizes.
How do I justify qualitative dominance to a quantitatively oriented review committee?
Frame it as a matter of epistemological fit: when the phenomenon is poorly mapped and existing constructs are culturally inappropriate, quantitative data collected before qualitative exploration cannot validly represent participants' realities. The qualitative phase provides the construct validity that makes the subsequent quantitative phase credible. At what points do I integrate the two strands?
