Qualitative-Dominant Multiphase Mixed Methods Design

The qualitative-dominant multiphase mixed methods design combines multiple, sequentially or iteratively organized phases across a research program, with qualitative inquiry holding explicit priority. Quantitative data are collected in one or more supporting phases to supplement, refine, or validate the dominant qualitative strands. The design is common in longitudinal program evaluations, theory-building projects, and community-based participatory research where deep contextual understanding is the primary aim.

When to use it
Use this design when a research program spanning multiple phases requires qualitative insight as its primary driver, with quantitative data serving in a supporting or confirmatory role. It is well-suited to longitudinal evaluation studies, participatory research, and theory-building projects where no single qualitative or quantitative phase would be sufficient on its own. Avoid it when the research question is primarily predictive or explanatory at scale — in those cases a quantitative-dominant or balanced design is more appropriate. Also avoid it when resources, time, or team expertise are insufficient to execute and coordinate multiple methodologically distinct phases; a simpler sequential design may be more feasible.

How does this design differ from a standard exploratory sequential design?
An exploratory sequential design is a two-phase structure: qualitative data inform the development of a quantitative instrument, which is then administered and analyzed. The qualitative-dominant multiphase design extends across three or more phases, may cycle back to qualitative inquiry after quantitative phases, and is used for sustained research programs rather than single-study instrument development. The qualitative dominance is also made explicit as a design-level commitment, not just a sequence decision.
When should I use QUAL + quan notation versus QUAL → quan → QUAL?
QUAL + quan (with a plus sign) conventionally signals simultaneous or embedded strand relationships; arrows (→) signal sequential phases. In a multiphase design with three or more phases you would use arrows to show the sequence of phases: for example, QUAL → quan → QUAL. The uppercase QUAL at each occurrence signals qualitative priority throughout. Using the correct notation helps readers and reviewers quickly grasp your design logic.
How many phases are too many?
There is no fixed maximum, but each additional phase must be justified by a research question that cannot be answered by the preceding phases. Practically, programs with more than four or five distinct phases become very difficult to coordinate and sustain. If you find yourself planning six or more phases, consider whether the later phases constitute a new research program that should be designed and funded separately.
Can doctoral students realistically execute this design?
A full multiphase design spanning several years is generally too ambitious for a single doctoral dissertation. Doctoral candidates who want to capture the multiphase spirit sometimes complete one major qualitative phase and one supporting quantitative phase — which is more accurately described as an exploratory or explanatory sequential design. True qualitative-dominant multiphase designs are best suited to funded research programs with multi-member teams.
How do I evaluate the quality of meta-inferences?
Tashakkori and Teddlie (2010) proposed evaluating meta-inferences using criteria including inference quality (credibility of individual phase findings), integration (adequacy of how strands are combined), and transferability (degree to which meta-inferences can apply to similar contexts). Reviewers should be able to trace how each phase's findings contributed to the final meta-inference and why any discrepancies between phases were resolved as they were.
