Sequential qualitative-priority mixed design is a two-phase mixed methods approach in which a qualitative strand is conducted first and carries greater weight in the overall study. The quantitative phase follows and serves to extend, test, or generalize the qualitative findings. The QUAL-first, QUAL-dominant logic makes this design well suited to exploratory research where theory or instruments are underdeveloped and must be grounded in participants' own words before being scaled up.

When to use it
Use this design when the research phenomenon is understudied or theory is absent, making quantitative measurement premature without first grounding items in participants' lived experience. It is the right choice when the goal is to develop instruments, typologies, or hypotheses from qualitative data and then test or generalize them. It fits education, health, psychology, and social science contexts where participant voice must shape measurement. Do not use it when the research question is purely explanatory (quantitative data first), when parallel collection is logistically superior, or when equal weighting of both strands is needed — in those cases consider an explanatory sequential, concurrent triangulation, or equal-weight design instead.

How is this different from the exploratory sequential design?
The exploratory sequential design is the most closely related typology — it also runs qualitative first and feeds into a quantitative phase. The distinction lies in emphasis: 'exploratory sequential' foregrounds the exploratory purpose (discovering what to measure), while 'sequential qualitative-priority' foregrounds the epistemological weight given to qualitative findings throughout, including at interpretation. In practice many researchers treat them as equivalent; the priority framing is more explicit about qualitative dominance at the conclusions stage.
Does qualitative priority mean I can skip full quantitative rigor?
No. Priority refers to interpretive weight and analytic emphasis, not to the technical standards of each phase. The quantitative phase must meet appropriate standards for sample size, measurement validity, and statistical analysis. Priority simply means that when results conflict or must be weighted, qualitative findings set the frame.
How large does each sample need to be?
Qualitative phase samples follow qualitative norms: 8–30 participants selected purposively for saturation, depending on design tradition. Quantitative phase samples follow statistical power requirements for the planned analyses — commonly 80–200+ participants for survey-based studies. The two phases typically draw from different (though possibly overlapping) samples.
At what point do I integrate the two strands?
Integration occurs at two mandatory points: the bridging step (translating qualitative outputs into quantitative inputs) and the interpretation stage (reading quantitative results through the qualitative frame). Some researchers also include a meta-inference section in which findings from both phases are jointly interpreted to produce conclusions that neither phase could support alone.
Is this design appropriate for a single researcher or requires a team?
It can be completed by a single researcher with competence in both qualitative and quantitative methods, but the sequential timing means the full project timeline is longer. Teams that divide the qualitative and quantitative phases must ensure strong communication during the bridging step to preserve fidelity between what was found qualitatively and what is subsequently measured.
