The qualitative-dominant explanatory sequential mixed methods design follows a two-phase sequential structure — quantitative data collected first, qualitative data collected second — while assigning dominant analytical weight to the qualitative strand. The quantitative phase surfaces statistical patterns that require deeper explanation; the qualitative phase, which carries greater interpretive authority in this variant, provides the rich contextual understanding that the numbers alone cannot supply.

When to use it

Use this design when a quantitative phase can efficiently identify a pattern, group, or anomaly that genuinely requires qualitative explanation, AND when the substantive conclusions of the study are expected to rest primarily on qualitative depth rather than statistical magnitude. It suits research questions such as 'Why do these survey-identified groups experience the phenomenon differently?' Avoid it when the quantitative results are already self-explanatory, when no plausible follow-up qualitative question is motivated by the numbers, or when stakeholders require statistically generalisable conclusions as the primary output — in those cases a quantitative-priority or concurrent design is more appropriate.

  • The design requires the researcher to be competent in both quantitative analysis and qualitative inquiry — a rare skill combination.
  • Small qualitative samples selected from quantitative results may not be diverse enough to reach theoretical saturation.

How does this differ from the standard explanatory sequential design?

The standard explanatory sequential design is agnostic about which strand carries more weight, or implicitly treats both strands as roughly equal contributors. The qualitative-dominant variant explicitly assigns greater analytical authority, sampling depth, and reporting space to the qualitative phase. This means the final claims of the study are grounded primarily in qualitative evidence, with quantitative findings serving as a backdrop and selection frame.

Why would I choose qualitative dominance in an explanatory sequential design rather than a purely qualitative study?

When a quantitative phase adds genuine value — particularly for identifying a specific sub-population or pattern that motivates focused qualitative inquiry — the sequential structure is more efficient than qualitative-only purposive sampling from a broad population. The quantitative phase narrows the focus and adds credibility to the sampling strategy, even though the qualitative strand ultimately drives the conclusions.

How do I report priority weighting in a manuscript?

State clearly in the methods section that the qualitative strand carries dominant weight, explain the rationale (e.g., the research question is fundamentally interpretive), and reflect this in how you allocate space in the results and discussion. Morse's notation (QUAL→quan) can be used in diagrams. Reviewers familiar with mixed methods will expect an explicit justification.

Is this design appropriate for a doctoral thesis?

Yes, but with attention to timeline. The two-phase structure means that qualitative data collection cannot begin until quantitative analysis is complete, which can extend the study by several months. Doctoral candidates should plan for this lag and ensure their committee includes expertise in both methodological strands.

How large should the qualitative sample be?

Because participants are purposively selected from the quantitative dataset, the qualitative sample is usually small and targeted — commonly 10 to 25 participants — but the criterion should be conceptual adequacy or theoretical saturation rather than a fixed number. The dominant role of the qualitative strand means that depth and richness of data matter more than sample size.
