Qualitative-Dominant Case-Focused Mixed Methods Design

Qualitative-dominant case-focused mixed methods design embeds quantitative evidence inside a primarily qualitative case study framework. The case — a bounded unit such as a school, organization, or community — is examined in depth through qualitative means, while quantitative data serve a secondary, supplementary role. Priority is firmly with the qualitative strand, which drives interpretation and findings.

When to use it

Use this design when the research question requires deep contextual understanding of a bounded phenomenon, the qualitative strand carries the explanatory weight, and quantitative data are needed only to sharpen or corroborate specific aspects of the qualitative account. It is well suited to programme evaluation, organisational research, educational research, and health-services inquiry where cases are natural units of analysis. Do not use this design if the quantitative strand needs to test hypotheses or produce population-level estimates — in that situation a concurrent triangulation or explanatory sequential design with equal or quantitative priority is more appropriate. Avoid it when cases cannot be clearly bounded or when qualitative data collection is not feasible.

Limitations
  • Findings are bounded by the case and are not statistically generalisable; analytical generalisation to theory is possible but requires careful argument.
  • Managing the qualitative-quantitative interface demands skill: underdeveloped integration reduces the design to two parallel studies rather than one coherent mixed-methods study.
  • Time and resource intensive — in-depth qualitative work combined with quantitative data collection places substantial demands on the researcher.
  • The secondary quantitative strand may be under-powered if sampling decisions are driven by qualitative logic rather than statistical requirements.

How is this design different from a plain case study?

A plain case study relies exclusively on qualitative data collection and analysis. The qualitative-dominant case-focused mixed methods design deliberately adds a quantitative strand — surveys, counts, or archival statistics — to enrich or corroborate the qualitative account. The case remains the unit of analysis and qualitative methods drive interpretation, but the intentional integration of numeric evidence is what makes it a mixed methods design rather than a purely qualitative one.

How many cases can I include?

Single-case and multiple-case versions are both legitimate. A single case offers maximum depth; multiple cases (typically two to eight) allow cross-case comparison. The choice should follow the research question: if you need to understand one instance in exceptional depth, use a single case; if you need to examine how the phenomenon plays out across varied contexts, use multiple cases with a cross-case synthesis stage.

How do I justify qualitative dominance to reviewers who expect quantitative rigour?

Make the epistemological rationale explicit: qualitative dominance is appropriate when the research question asks about meaning, process, or context rather than magnitude or frequency. Describe how qualitative data were collected and analysed rigorously, explain the specific role the quantitative data play, and show how integration produces insights neither strand could yield alone. Citing Creswell and Plano Clark or Teddlie and Tashakkori for the design typology helps establish the scholarly basis for the priority decision.

What does integration look like in practice?

Common integration strategies include joint displays — tables or matrices that place qualitative themes alongside quantitative summaries — narrative weaving, where numeric data are cited within the interpretive text to contextualise or substantiate a qualitative claim, and data transformation, where qualitative codes are quantitised into frequency counts that are then compared against survey responses. The key is that integration is planned in advance and produces a merged interpretation, not two separate results sections.

When should I choose a concurrent embedded design instead?

A concurrent embedded design is appropriate when qualitative and quantitative data are collected simultaneously and the primary design is already well-specified as either qualitative or quantitative. If the case structure itself is the organising principle of your study — meaning the case boundaries determine what data to collect and how to interpret them — then the case-focused label is more accurate. If the case boundary is not meaningful and you simply want a dominant strand with a nested minor strand, concurrent embedded is the better fit.
