Sequential case-focused mixed methods design combines the depth of case study methodology with the phased data-collection logic of sequential mixed methods. Quantitative and qualitative data are gathered in distinct, ordered phases — either QUAN then QUAL or QUAL then QUAN — and both strands are anchored within one or more bounded cases. When to use it
Use this design when the research question requires understanding a phenomenon in depth within a specific real-world context and when different types of data are needed sequentially to build that understanding. It is appropriate when a first-phase result (statistical pattern, exploratory theme, or anomaly) raises a question that only the complementary strand can address. The design is well suited to programme evaluation, organisational research, health services research, and educational studies where context is theoretically important. Do not use it when the research question is purely distributional (a survey suffices), when time or resources preclude two full data-collection phases, or when the case boundaries cannot be meaningfully defined — in such situations a single-strand design or a concurrent mixed methods design is more appropriate.

What is the difference between sequential case-focused mixed methods and the standard explanatory sequential design?
Both use a QUAN-then-QUAL sequence, but the standard explanatory sequential design typically samples from a population and selects follow-up participants based on statistical results. The case-focused variant fixes the unit of analysis on one or more bounded cases from the outset — both strands are anchored within the same case(s), which are chosen for their contextual relevance rather than their statistical representativeness.
How many cases should I include?
A single case is defensible when the case is theoretically unique or revelatory. Two to four cases support cross-case comparison and are common in mixed methods case work. More than six cases can become unwieldy in a sequential design because the depth of two-strand analysis must be maintained for each case. The key criterion is whether each case is bounded, relevant, and manageable given the sequencing requirement.
Can the QUAL strand come first?
Yes. The design accommodates either QUAL-first or QUAN-first sequencing depending on the research question. If preliminary qualitative exploration of the case is needed to develop meaningful instruments or identify hypotheses, a QUAL-first approach is appropriate. The defining feature is that the strands are sequential and that the integration point between them is explicit and purposive.
How is integration achieved in practice?
The most common integration strategy is a joint display — a matrix or figure that places first-strand findings alongside second-strand data for the same case, enabling direct comparison. Another approach is using first-strand results to purposively sample participants or sites for the second strand. The integration rationale and decisions should be documented in the methods section, not treated as implicit.
Is this design appropriate for a dissertation?
It is feasible but demanding for a dissertation. The sequential timing means the project cannot proceed to phase two until phase one is complete and analysed, which compresses the timeline. Students should negotiate the scope carefully — typically a single case or a small set of two cases — and have clear IRB approval covering both phases before data collection begins.
