Embedded case-focused mixed methods design combines a case-study unit of analysis with an embedded mixed methods structure, nesting one smaller data strand — typically qualitative — within a dominant primary strand — typically quantitative — all organized around one or more bounded cases. This design enables researchers to answer within-case questions at multiple levels, capturing both statistical patterns and rich contextual meaning for a specific case or set of cases.

When to use it
Use this design when the research question is inherently case-centered — when findings must be understood in the context of a specific bounded entity — and when a single data type is insufficient to answer the full question. It is especially well suited to program evaluation, organizational research, educational studies, and health-systems research where a particular site, intervention, or community is the focus. The embedded strand should be genuinely supplemental, not a parallel equal strand; if both strands carry equal weight, a concurrent triangulation or convergent design is more appropriate. Avoid this design when the case boundaries are unclear or contested, when the embedded strand is so large it overshadows the primary strand, or when the researcher lacks the skills to analyze both data types rigorously.

How is this design different from a simple case study that uses both surveys and interviews?
A simple case study might collect multiple data types without specifying which strand is primary and which is supplemental, or without explicit integration logic. The embedded case-focused design requires a deliberate decision about strand priority, a clear integration strategy, and explicit attention to how the case boundary organizes both strands. The mixing is intentional and methodologically justified, not just opportunistic data triangulation.
Can I have more than one embedded strand?
Yes. Creswell and Plano Clark acknowledge designs with multiple supplemental strands nested within a primary strand. However, as the number of strands grows, the design approaches a multiphase or complex mixed methods design, and the rationale for keeping each additional strand genuinely embedded rather than equal becomes harder to sustain.
How many cases do I need?
A single case is sufficient and common — the power comes from depth within the case rather than replication across cases. Multiple cases are appropriate when cross-case comparison is a research goal, but each additional case multiplies the data collection and integration burden considerably.
When should I choose this design over an explanatory sequential design?
Choose the embedded case-focused design when the case as a bounded entity is itself theoretically important and findings must be interpreted within a specific context. Choose an explanatory sequential design when you want to explain quantitative results through qualitative follow-up but your sample is not organized around a bounded case. If site-specific context is central to your research questions, the case-focused structure is more appropriate.
How do I report integration in this design?
The most common strategy is a joint display — a table or figure that presents quantitative results alongside corresponding qualitative themes, making the connections explicit. Narrative integration, where the discussion section explicitly addresses how each strand answers a different facet of the same case-level question, is also standard. Simply reporting the two strands in separate sections without connecting them is not considered genuine mixed methods integration.
