Free listing is a foundational elicitation technique in cognitive anthropology in which informants are asked to name, in any order, all the items they can think of that belong to a cultural domain — for example 'all the kinds of fruit' or 'all the things that can give you a cold.' Aggregating these lists reveals both the content of the domain (which items belong) and the salience of each item (how culturally central it is), inferred from how frequently and how early it is mentioned.

When to use it

Use free listing at the start of studying any cultural domain when you want to discover, in the informants' own terms, what items the domain contains and which are most salient — before designing surveys, pile sorts, or consensus tasks. It is ideal for defining the item universe for later cultural domain analysis. It assumes the domain is reasonably bounded and that informants share a common language for it. It is less useful for abstract domains people cannot enumerate, for measuring relationships between items (use pile sorting or triads), or when you need depth on a single item rather than breadth across many.

How many informants does a free-list study need?

Salience estimates for the most common items stabilize quickly — typically 20 to 30 informants are enough to identify the core, high-salience items of a domain, because frequent items appear early and repeatedly. Capturing rare, peripheral items reliably requires substantially larger samples, since each appears in only a handful of lists.

What is Smith's salience index and why use it?

Smith's S combines how often an item is mentioned with how early it appears in each list, averaging a per-informant local salience (list length minus rank position, normalized) across the whole sample. It is preferred over raw frequency because it rewards items that are both common and cognitively prominent, giving a more faithful ranking of cultural importance.

Can free listing measure relationships between items?

Not directly. Free lists tell you which items belong to a domain and how salient each is, but not how items are similar or grouped. To recover the internal structure and similarity relations among items you pair free listing with pile sorting or triad tests, using the free-list output as the validated item set.
