Rank-Order Elicitation
Also known as: Ranking Task, Complete Ranking Elicitation, Ordinal Ranking Task, Rank Aggregation
Rank-order elicitation asks each informant to place a set of items into a complete order on a single criterion — from most to least important, severe, preferred, or typical — so that the whole domain is captured in one ordinal judgment per person. Unlike paired comparison, which gathers many local two-item choices, ranking obtains the global order directly, trading some redundancy for speed. Aggregating the individual rankings produces a group ordering, while a concordance statistic measures how strongly the informants agree.

When to use it
Use rank-order elicitation when you need each informant's complete ordering of a manageable set of items on one clear criterion and you want both a consensus order and a measure of agreement. It suits domains such as values, priorities, perceived severity, or preference where a single dimension is meaningful and the item set is small enough to hold in mind. It assumes the criterion is unidimensional and that informants can sensibly order all items at once. It is less appropriate for large item sets that exceed working memory, for multidimensional comparisons, or when you want interval distances rather than positions — for those, turn to paired comparison or pile sorting.

How does ranking differ from paired comparison?
Ranking obtains an informant's complete order in one pass, so it is fast and automatically transitive but offers no internal consistency check and only ordinal information. Paired comparison gathers every two-item judgment, which is more burdensome but redundant — it lets you check transitivity and recover interval scale values. Choose ranking for speed and a global order, paired comparison for fine, checkable measurement.
What is Kendall's coefficient of concordance W?
W measures how much a set of rankers agree, ranging from 0 (rankings unrelated to one another) to 1 (all rankers produce the identical order). It is computed from the variance of the summed ranks across items and can be tested for statistical significance. A high, significant W justifies reporting the aggregate ranking as a shared cultural order; a low W indicates the group does not share one.
Should I report mean rank or Borda count?
They are essentially equivalent positional aggregations — the Borda count is a linear transformation of the mean rank — so they always yield the same aggregate order. Mean rank is the more common report in anthropology and is easy to read directly, while the Borda count is sometimes clearer when framed as points an item accumulates across all informants' rankings.
