Cultural Domain Analysis

Cultural domain analysis is the integrated framework in cognitive anthropology for discovering the content and structure of a cultural domain — a coherent set of related items such as illnesses, animals, kin terms, or emotions — as the members of a culture themselves organize it. It chains together elicitation methods (free listing, pile sorting, triad tests) and analytic methods (salience, multidimensional scaling, clustering, consensus analysis) to move from 'what items are in this domain?' to 'how are they organized and how widely is that organization shared?'

When to use it

Use cultural domain analysis when your goal is to describe how a group cognitively organizes a bounded set of related concepts, in their own terms, and to quantify how widely that organization is shared. It suits ethnographic, medical-anthropology, and ethnobiological questions about folk taxonomies, perceptions, and shared knowledge. It assumes the domain is enumerable and that items are comparable. It is less appropriate for unbounded or highly abstract domains, for questions about individual narratives rather than shared structure, or when the population is so heterogeneous that no consensus structure exists.

Is cultural domain analysis a single method or a framework?

It is a framework that orchestrates several methods. A typical study chains free listing (to find the items and their salience), pile sorting or triad tests (to elicit similarity), multidimensional scaling and clustering (to map structure), and cultural consensus analysis (to test sharedness). The power of the approach comes from combining these complementary techniques rather than from any one of them alone.

How does it relate to Spradley's domain analysis?

They share the term 'domain' but differ in tradition. Spradley's domain analysis is an interpretive, interview-based procedure for discovering folk categories through semantic relationships in discourse. Cultural domain analysis in Borgatti's sense is a quantitative, systematic-data-collection approach using structured elicitation tasks and statistical scaling. The two can complement each other but rest on different methodologies.

Why combine pile sorts or triads with consensus analysis?

Pile sorts and triads give you the similarity structure of the domain, but aggregating across informants assumes everyone shares that structure. Cultural consensus analysis formally tests that assumption: a single dominant agreement dimension confirms one shared organization, while multiple dimensions reveal that subgroups organize the domain differently, which would invalidate a single pooled map.
