Ethnographic mapping is a fieldwork technique in which the researcher — rather than the participants — systematically records a community's physical and social space: the layout of households, the placement of resources such as wells, markets, and fields, the boundaries people recognize, and the routine paths along which people and goods move. Sketch maps drawn in the field and georeferenced coordinates captured with GPS are treated as primary ethnographic data, not mere illustration. The resulting map anchors observation, sampling, and interpretation in the concrete geography of social life.

When to use it

Use ethnographic mapping early in a community study when you need a reliable spatial frame for sampling households, situating observations, and interpreting how social relations are distributed across space. It is well suited to bounded settlements, neighborhoods, or resource areas where physical layout matters to the research question, and it pairs naturally with household censuses, genealogies, and participant observation. It is less appropriate for highly dispersed or rapidly shifting populations, for purely virtual or networked communities with no spatial referent, or when the research question is indifferent to location.

Who actually draws the map in ethnographic mapping?

The researcher draws and maintains the map as an analytic record, walking and pacing the site and consulting informants to confirm names, placements, and boundaries. This distinguishes it from participatory mapping, where community members themselves draw maps to express their own spatial knowledge; in ethnographic mapping the cartographer is the ethnographer.

Do I need GPS and GIS software to do it?

No. A careful scaled sketch made by pacing is valid ethnographic data on its own. GPS georeferencing and GIS add absolute location, measurability, and the ability to overlay imagery, which is valuable when you need distance, density, or change analysis, but the foundational technique is the field sketch.

How is the map used as data rather than just a picture?

Once features are placed and annotated, the map yields measurable variables — distances to resources, household densities, proximity between groups, boundary locations — and these are linked to social information such as kinship, tenure, and affiliation. The map then supports sampling decisions and tests of how social structure maps onto physical space.
