Cultural Salience Analysis

Cultural salience analysis is the analytical step that turns raw free-list data into a ranked measure of how culturally central each item is, by combining two signals that free lists capture for free: how often an item is mentioned and how early it appears in informants' lists. The standard estimator is Smith's salience index S, which credits each item for being both common across people and prominent in recall, then averages that credit over the whole sample. Breaking salience out by code or subgroup further reveals how the importance of items shifts across genders, ages, expertise levels, or cultural groups.

When to use it
Use cultural salience analysis whenever you have free-list data and want to rank items by cultural importance rather than mere presence, or to compare how that importance differs across subgroups. It is the standard follow-on to a free-listing study and the basis for choosing salient items to carry into pile sorts, triad tests, or consensus instruments. It assumes lists were collected with order preserved and items carefully normalized. It is less appropriate when list order was not recorded, when the domain is so sparse that few items recur, or when you need relational structure among items rather than a one-dimensional importance ranking — for that, pair it with pile sorting or scaling.

What exactly does Smith's salience index measure?
It measures how culturally prominent an item is by rewarding it for being mentioned by many informants and for appearing early in their lists. For each informant the item earns a local score equal to (list length − rank + 1)/list length, so first-mentioned items score near 1; the index S is the mean of these scores over the whole sample, with zeros for non-mentions. A high S means an item is both common and cognitively salient.
Why normalize by list length?
Informants produce lists of very different lengths, and without normalization a fourth-position item would look equally salient whether it came from a four-item list or a forty-item list. Dividing by list length, the Smith–Borgatti correction, puts every informant's contributions on a common 0-to-1 scale so that early mentions in short lists and early mentions in long lists are properly comparable.
How do I compare salience between groups?
Recompute the index within each subgroup — averaging local salience only over the informants in that group — to get a salience-by-group table, and compare each item's score across groups. Large differences flag items whose cultural importance is group-specific, signalling distinct or contested cultural models; just be wary of small or unequal subgroup sizes, which make the group scores unstable.
