Sentence-Frame Substitution Task

The sentence-frame substitution task is a frame-elicitation technique in which the researcher builds a small set of sentence frames — templates such as 'Can you get X from Y?' or 'Is X a kind of Y?' — and asks informants to judge, for each item and each frame, whether the completed sentence is true or sensible. Each item is slotted into every frame in turn, and the yes/no verdicts are tallied into an item-by-attribute matrix. That binary matrix is the raw material for componential and ethnoscience analysis, which uncovers the features that distinguish the items of a cultural domain.

When to use it

Use the sentence-frame substitution task when you want to discover the distinctive features that define and separate the items of a cultural domain, especially after free listing has established what the items are. It is the natural tool for componential and ethnoscience analysis of folk classifications — kinship terms, illness categories, plant uses — where membership turns on attributes that informants can confirm sentence by sentence. It assumes the domain is well bounded, that meaningful frames can be written, and that judgments are reasonably shared. It is less suitable for domains without crisp truth-conditional features, for very large item or frame sets that make the grid unwieldy, or when you care about graded similarity rather than discrete attributes.

Free listing tells you which items belong to a domain and how salient they are, and pile sorting tells you how similar items are overall. Frame substitution instead recovers the specific attributes that define and separate items, by testing each item against feature-probing sentences. It typically follows free listing — which supplies the items — and complements pile sorting by explaining the features behind the groupings.

Where do the sentence frames come from?

Good frames are derived from informants themselves: from the contrastive questions and statements that surface in open-ended interviews and from the structure of earlier free lists. The aim is to capture the dimensions the culture actually uses, not the researcher's a priori categories, so frame development usually involves an iterative, ethnographic phase before the systematic grid is administered.

What is componential analysis and how does the matrix feed it?

Componential analysis seeks the minimal set of distinctive features that uniquely characterizes every item in a domain — the smallest combination of attributes that tells each item apart from the others.
