การวิจัยทดสอบแบบจำลองเปรียบเทียบเป็นการออกแบบเชิงปริมาณที่แบบจำลองที่อิงทฤษฎีตั้งแต่สองแบบขึ้นไป — หรือแบบจำลองเดียวกันที่ประเมินในกลุ่มหรือเงื่อนไขที่แตกต่างกัน — จะถูกทดสอบและเปรียบเทียบอย่างเป็นระบบโดยใช้ดัชนีความกลมกลืน (fit indices) การทดสอบอัตราส่วนความควรจะเป็น (likelihood-ratio tests) หรือเกณฑ์สารสนเทศ (information criteria) เป้าหมายคือเพื่อระบุว่าแบบจำลองใดแสดงโครงสร้างข้อมูลได้ดีกว่า หรือโครงสร้างพารามิเตอร์ของแบบจำลองนั้นคงที่หรือไม่ในกลุ่มที่นำมาเปรียบเทียบ
