การวิเคราะห์องค์ประกอบเชิงสำรวจแบบพหุวิภาค (Polytomous exploratory factor analysis) เป็นการขยายขอบเขตของ EFA มาตรฐานไปสู่ข้อมูลการตอบสนองแบบจัดเรียงตามลำดับ (ประเภทลิเคิร์ท) โดยแทนที่เมทริกซ์สหสัมพันธ์แบบเพียร์สันด้วยเมทริกซ์สหสัมพันธ์แบบพหุวิภาค วิธีนี้จะกู้คืนตัวแปรแฝงต่อเนื่องที่แต่ละรายการแบบพหุวิภาคสันนิษฐานว่าสะท้อนออกมา ทำให้ได้ค่าน้ำหนักองค์ประกอบที่แม่นยำยิ่งขึ้นและโครงสร้างองค์ประกอบที่ชัดเจนกว่าการถือว่าคะแนนอันดับเป็นแบบต่อเนื่อง
