Kiliandaliwa na Diamond na kuboreshwa kupitia tafiti za uthibitisho na Rothman na wenzake, NLAI hutathmini uelewa wa lebo za lishe, ufahamu wa vipimo vya sehemu za chakula, ujuzi wa maadili ya kila siku, na uwezo wa kutafsiri madai ya virutubisho. Uelewa wa lishe ni kiamua muhimu cha ubora wa lishe na matokeo ya afya, hasa katika jamii zenye kiwango cha chini cha ujuzi wa jumla au hesabu ndogo.
