Korelacija naspram kauzalnosti

Korelacija meri snagu i smer povezanosti između dve promenljive; kauzalnost podrazumeva da promene u jednoj promenljivoj direktno proizvode promene u drugoj. Jaka korelacija (npr. r = 0,9) ne dokazuje kauzalnost. Postoji mnoštvo klasičnih primera: veličina obuće i sposobnost čitanja su korelirane kod dece (konfundovane uzrastom), ali veličina obuće ne uzrokuje sposobnost čitanja. Razumevanje kada korelacija podrazumeva kauzalnost zahteva procenu dizajna studije, konfundujućih promenljivih, vremenske prethodnosti i mehanizma. Randomizovani eksperimenti nude najjače kauzalne dokaze; opservacione studije moraju pažljivo kontrolisati konfundere.
