Controversy Mapping

Controversy mapping is a descriptive method for exploring and representing socio-technical disputes while they are still open and unsettled, before they harden into accepted facts or stable technologies. Developed as a teaching practice by Bruno Latour and codified by Tommaso Venturini at the Sciences Po médialab, it asks the analyst to dive into the heat of a debate, follow the actors and their arguments without prematurely taking sides, and render the resulting complexity legible through maps and visualisations. It treats controversy not as a pathology to be resolved but as the privileged moment in which the social and the technical are visibly being assembled.

When to use it
Use controversy mapping when you want to understand a socio-technical dispute that is currently live and unresolved—an emerging technology, a contested scientific claim, a regulatory fight—and you can gather rich documentary and digital traces of the debate. It suits situations where many heterogeneous actors are visibly negotiating what counts as fact, risk, or the right course of action, and where the analyst can adopt a symmetrical, observational stance. The method assumes the controversy is observable and that the analyst can resist taking sides or seeking premature closure. It is less appropriate for settled questions whose disputes have already black-boxed, for cases where access to the relevant traces is impossible, or when the goal is to adjudicate who is right rather than to describe how the dispute is structured.

Controversy mapping deliberately suspends judgement about who is right and instead describes how the dispute is structured—who the actors are, what they claim, and how alliances and arguments evolve. The analyst observes from many viewpoints at once and grants symmetry to all parties rather than endorsing one. The aim is a faithful, navigable map of the disagreement, not a verdict that ends it.
What role do digital methods play in controversy mapping?
Digital methods let researchers harvest large, heterogeneous traces of debate—web pages, hyperlinks, citations, news, and social-media activity—and treat them as evidence of associations among actors. Venturini's 2012 work showed how these traces can be queried and visualised to represent controversies at scale. They complement rather than replace traditional qualitative fieldwork, and they carry their own biases toward actors who are visible online.
Why must the controversy be 'open' rather than settled?
The method draws its power from the moment when facts, risks, and technologies are still being negotiated, because that is when the associations holding the social and technical together are visible. Once a controversy black-boxes into accepted fact or stable technology, the underlying work disappears from view and there is little left to map. Live controversies expose the magma that settled ones conceal.
