Laboratory Ethnography

Laboratory ethnography is the anthropological study of scientists at work, observing how scientific facts are constructed through the mundane practices of the laboratory rather than discovered ready-made in nature. Pioneered by Bruno Latour and Steve Woolgar's Laboratory Life and Karin Knorr-Cetina's The Manufacture of Knowledge in the late 1970s and early 1980s, it brought the gaze of the field anthropologist into the lab as if studying an exotic tribe. The method follows benchwork, inscription devices, and the conversational and material labour through which claims are stripped of their qualifications until they harden into facts. It treats knowledge as manufactured, local, and contingent, and renders that manufacture visible through immersive observation and thick description.

Use laboratory ethnography when you want to understand how scientific or technical knowledge is actually produced in practice—how facts, results, and instruments come to be—rather than how scientists rationalise their work after the fact. It suits questions about the everyday epistemic culture of a research setting, the role of instruments and writing in knowledge-making, and the contingency of results, and it requires the ability to secure prolonged observational access. The method assumes that knowledge is constructed locally, that immersion can reveal practices invisible in published accounts, and that the observer can sustain methodological strangeness. It is less appropriate when access is impossible, when only published outputs are available, when rapid or large-N comparison is needed, or when the goal is to evaluate the truth of scientific claims rather than to describe their making.

What does it mean to say facts are 'constructed' in laboratory ethnography?
It means that scientific facts are the outcome of concrete work—experiments, instruments, writing, negotiation, and the gradual removal of qualifying phrases—rather than statements simply read off from nature. Latour and Woolgar traced how a claim laden with modalities ('it may be that...') becomes, through this labour, an unqualified fact whose construction is then forgotten. Construction is a claim about how facts are made and stabilised, not a denial that they hold.
What is an inscription device?
An inscription device is any apparatus or arrangement that transforms a material substance into a readable trace—a chart, peak, number, or figure—that can be used in arguments and papers. Latour and Woolgar argued that much of laboratory life consists of producing and manipulating such inscriptions, which let scientists treat messy phenomena as legible evidence. Inscriptions are central because they make nature portable and combinable on paper.
Isn't observing facts being constructed just relativism?
Laboratory ethnographers generally reject that charge: showing that facts are made through human and material work does not entail that any claim is as good as any other. The point is to describe the conditions and practices under which some claims come to count as facts while others do not. The method is agnostic about ultimate truth and focused on the social and material process of stabilisation, which is an empirical, not a metaphysical, question.
