Boundary-work analysis studies how the line between science and non-science is drawn, defended, and contested—not by philosophers laying down timeless criteria, but by actors doing rhetorical work to secure authority, resources, and credibility. Introduced by Thomas Gieryn in 1983 and elaborated in his 1999 book Cultural Boundaries of Science, the approach treats demarcation as a practical, strategic, and historically variable accomplishment. The method examines the discourse of demarcation episodes to reveal the strategies—expansion, expulsion, and protection of autonomy—through which the cultural map of science is redrawn whenever its credibility is on the line.

Use boundary-work analysis when you want to understand how the authority and identity of science are constructed and defended in practice—especially in disputes over what counts as legitimate knowledge, who deserves expert standing, or how science should relate to politics, law, or religion. It suits episodes with rich public discourse, such as pseudoscience controversies, courtroom battles over science, professional turf wars, and debates over research funding and autonomy. The method assumes that demarcation is a contingent, interest-laden rhetorical accomplishment rather than a logical fact, and that the relevant discourse is accessible. It is less appropriate for evaluating whether a claim is actually scientific in a philosophical sense, or for settings where no public boundary-drawing rhetoric exists to analyse.

Gieryn distinguishes three recurrent strategies. Expansion extends the cultural authority of science into a domain claimed by rivals; expulsion casts deviants, frauds, or pseudo-scientists out of science to protect its reputation; and protection of autonomy fends off outside interference (political, commercial, religious) to safeguard scientists' resources and independence. Actors often combine these strategies within a single contest as circumstances shift.

Is boundary-work the same as the concept of boundary objects?

No, and conflating them is a common error. Boundary-work, Gieryn's concept, is the rhetorical drawing and policing of the line between science and non-science. Boundary objects, by contrast, are a separate idea (from Star and Griesemer) about artefacts or standards that are flexible enough to coordinate cooperation across different social worlds. The two address very different phenomena even though both invoke 'boundaries'.

Does boundary-work analysis decide whether something really is science?

No. The method deliberately suspends the philosophical question of true demarcation and instead studies how actors themselves draw and contest the boundary in practice. Its claim is that 'science' has no fixed essence that settles such disputes; rather, the boundary is an outcome of credibility contests shaped by interests, audiences, and rhetoric.
