Web controversy analysis studies scientific, technical, and public controversies through the traces they leave online—hyperlink networks, search-engine results, and social-media activity. Building on the controversy-mapping tradition but reworking it as a web-native digital method, it follows Tommaso Venturini's call to 'build on faults' and Noortje Marres's argument for controversy analysis as a digital method, using crawling and co-link analysis to reveal how positions in a dispute are connected, opposed, and arranged across the web.

When to use it
Use web controversy analysis when a dispute is actively unfolding online and the actors leave rich, linkable traces—organisational websites, campaign pages, social-media accounts—that a crawler can follow. It suits the study of science, technology, environment, and public-health controversies where the relational architecture of positions is itself the question. The method assumes the controversy is 'warm' enough to have stabilised into recognisable positions yet still live, and that the web meaningfully reflects the dispute. It is less appropriate when the controversy is settled, when it plays out chiefly offline or in closed channels, or when the relevant actors lack a hyperlinked web presence.

How does web controversy analysis differ from classic controversy mapping?
Classic controversy mapping (Latour, Venturini) is a broad pedagogy for describing a dispute in all its dimensions—actors, arguments, instruments, cosmologies—often drawing on documents, interviews, and observation. Web controversy analysis is the web-native variant: it specifically harvests online traces, crawls hyperlink networks, and uses co-link analysis to build the map. It is narrower in data but more reproducible and scalable, and it is best treated as one technique within the wider controversy-mapping repertoire rather than a replacement for it.
How is it related to issue mapping?
They share tools and lineage. Issue mapping (Marres, Rogers) centres on the issue as the formation that gathers a public and lets the issue demarcate the corpus; web controversy analysis centres on the controversy as a dispute and on the fault lines between positions. Both rely on the Digital Methods Initiative toolkit and on native objects like links and hashtags. In a given project the boundary is porous—an issue map and a controversy map of the same matter will overlap—but the framing differs in whether the public-gathering issue or the structured dispute is foregrounded.
Are hyperlinks still meaningful as debate moves onto platforms?
Hyperlinks remain meaningful among organisational and media websites, but their reach has narrowed as much controversy migrates into platform-internal interactions—mentions, replies, shares—that do not surface as open web links. Web controversy analysis has adapted by complementing link crawls with platform data captured through tools like 4CAT, treating mentions and co-engagement as additional relational currencies. The web-native principle holds, but the analyst must now follow the controversy across both the open web and platform interiors.
