Classificatie van teledetectiebeelden kent discrete thematische labels – zoals bos, stedelijk gebied, water of bouwland – toe aan pixels in een satelliet- of luchtfoto op basis van hun spectrale, ruimtelijke en temporele eigenschappen. Het vormt de basis voor landgebruik-/landbedekkingskartering, veranderingen detecteren, milieumonitoring en rampenbestrijding op lokale tot mondiale schaal.
