비교 제도 민족지(Comparative Institutional Ethnography, CIE)는 도로시 스미스(Dorothy Smith)의 제도 민족지를 두 개 이상의 제도적 설정으로 확장하여 텍스트, 지배 관계, 조정된 작업 관행이 서로 다른 조직적 맥락에서 어떻게 작동하는지를 밝혀낸다. 작업자나 고객의 관점을 일정하게 유지하면서 제도적 현장을 다양화함으로써, CIE는 병원, 학교, 복지 기관, 법원과 같은 제도 내 일상 경험을 형성하는 공유된 이념적 메커니즘과 지역적 차이를 모두 드러낸다.
