비교 담화 분석은 최소 두 개의 서로 다른 맥락, 집단, 시대 또는 기관에서 추출된 텍스트나 발화 행위를 체계적으로 대조함으로써 언어가 의미, 정체성, 권력을 어떻게 구성하는지 탐구한다. 분석 범주를 사례별로 일정하게 유지함으로써, 단일 맥락 담화 분석으로는 생성할 수 없는 통찰력을 산출하는 담화 패턴의 차이점 또는 유사점을 드러낸다.
