Proportional Purposive Sampling
Also known as: proportional criterion sampling, quota-proportional purposive sampling, representational purposive sampling
Proportional purposive sampling combines the intentional case selection of purposive sampling with proportional allocation across subgroups. Researchers first determine how each meaningful subgroup (e.g., gender, school type, professional role) is represented in the population, then deliberately select participants from each subgroup in those same proportions — using purposive judgment to ensure each selected case is information-rich and relevant to the research question.

When to use it
Use proportional purposive sampling when you need both representational balance across meaningful subgroups and the ability to select information-rich or criterion-meeting cases — a combination common in mixed-methods research, program evaluations, and qualitative studies embedded in larger surveys. It is appropriate when population subgroup proportions are known or estimable and when the research question requires that the sample reflect population diversity. Avoid it when subgroup proportions are unknown or unreliable, when the research goal is explicitly maximum variation (which would contradict proportional constraints), or when sample sizes are too small (fewer than about 15–20 total) to make proportional allocation meaningful.

How is this different from stratified random sampling?
In stratified random sampling, cases within each stratum are selected randomly, which supports inferential statistics. In proportional purposive sampling, cases are selected by researcher judgment within each cell to maximize information richness or criterion relevance. The proportional allocation logic is similar, but the within-cell selection mechanism is purposive rather than random, so probability-based inference does not apply.
How is this different from quota sampling?
Quota sampling fills proportional cells with any convenient respondents who meet basic eligibility criteria. Proportional purposive sampling imposes an additional quality criterion — cases must be information-rich, theoretically relevant, or otherwise purposively selected. The difference lies in the intentionality and rigor of within-cell selection.
How do I determine the right proportions if I lack census data?
When exact population proportions are unavailable, use the best available proxy: prior surveys, administrative databases, published demographic reports, or expert estimates. Document the source and acknowledge its limitations. If proportions are genuinely unknown and estimates would be unreliable, consider switching to maximum variation purposive sampling, which explicitly seeks diversity without requiring proportional targets.
Can I use proportional purposive sampling for a purely qualitative study?
Yes. When a qualitative study covers a diverse population and the researcher wants the sample to reflect known subgroup distributions — to increase the credibility and transferability of findings — proportional purposive sampling is appropriate even without a quantitative component. The proportional constraint strengthens the claim that findings are not artifacts of an unbalanced sample.
What sample size is typically needed?
There is no universal rule, but the practical floor is roughly 15–20 total participants, with enough in each proportional cell to permit meaningful purposive selection (at least 3–5 per cell). Below this threshold, proportional allocation produces cells too small to select informatively. For larger studies with many subgroups, samples of 40–80 are common.
