Typical Case Sampling — Typical Case Purposive Sampling

Typical Case Purposive Sampling · Also known as: typical case selection, modal case sampling, representative case sampling, average case sampling

Typical case sampling is a purposive strategy in which the researcher deliberately selects cases that represent what is ordinary, normal, or most common within a target group. Rather than seeking outliers or the widest possible variation, the goal is to illustrate and communicate what a typical experience, program, or phenomenon looks like to stakeholders or audiences unfamiliar with it. The strategy is widely used in qualitative evaluation research and program reporting.

When to use it

Use typical case sampling when the primary purpose is to illustrate and communicate what an ordinary, mainstream experience looks like — especially in evaluation studies, program assessments, or exploratory qualitative research aimed at audiences unfamiliar with the phenomenon. It suits situations where existing data (e.g., program records, prior surveys) allow the researcher to identify a central tendency or modal profile before sampling. Do NOT use it when the research question requires understanding the full range of variation, when outliers or exceptional cases are of theoretical interest, or when formal statistical generalization is required. It is also unsuitable when no prior information exists to define what 'typical' means in the target population.

Strengths
  • Produces focused, accessible case descriptions that communicate effectively to non-specialist stakeholders.
  • Efficient for program evaluation and reporting where describing the mainstream experience is sufficient.
  • Reduces analytic complexity by concentrating on central tendencies rather than the full distributional range.
  • Helps establish a credible baseline portrait against which deviant or extreme cases can later be compared.
  • Logistically practical when prior data (rosters, records) exist to identify typical participants quickly.
Limitations
  • Findings describe only the modal experience and do not represent the diversity or full range of cases in the population.
  • Requires pre-existing data or knowledge about the population to define 'typical'; if that information is absent, the strategy cannot be applied rigorously.
  • Results cannot be statistically generalized — the study is illustrative, not inferential.
  • Risk of implicit researcher bias in defining what counts as 'typical,' which can inadvertently marginalize minority or atypical experiences.
  • Less useful for theory-building than strategies such as maximum variation or theoretical sampling.

How do I know which cases are truly 'typical'?

Typicality must be grounded in prior empirical information about the population — program records, demographic data, preliminary surveys, or administrator knowledge. Define a profile of central-tendency attributes before approaching any potential participant. Researcher intuition alone is not sufficient; the profile should be documented and defensible.

How is typical case sampling different from maximum variation sampling?

They are opposite strategies within the purposive family. Maximum variation sampling deliberately seeks cases that differ as widely as possible on key attributes to capture the full range of experience. Typical case sampling deliberately selects cases that cluster around the modal or ordinary profile. Choose maximum variation when documenting diversity is the goal; choose typical case sampling when illustrating the mainstream is the goal.

Can I combine typical case sampling with other sampling strategies?

Yes. A common mixed strategy is to select a set of typical cases for a baseline description and then purposively add one or two deviant or extreme cases for contrast. This combination helps readers understand both what is normal and what departs from it. Document each sub-sample and its selection rationale separately.

Is typical case sampling appropriate for mixed-methods research?

It can be, particularly in explanatory sequential designs where quantitative data first establish the modal or average profile, and qualitative cases are then selected to fit that profile. The quantitative phase informs the definition of 'typical,' making the subsequent case selection more rigorous and defensible.

How many cases should I select?

There is no fixed rule. Three to ten cases is a common practical range. The number should be sufficient to triangulate across cases and convince the audience that the portrait is not idiosyncratic, but small enough to allow the rich, in-depth data collection that gives typical case sampling its communicative value.
