Adaptive purposive sampling is a qualitative strategy in which the researcher begins with explicitly stated, theory-driven selection criteria and then deliberately revises those criteria as data collection proceeds and new understanding emerges. Unlike fixed purposive sampling — where criteria are locked in before fieldwork — the adaptive variant treats the sampling frame as a working hypothesis that is refined in response to early findings, enabling the study to follow the evidence into unexpected but analytically important directions.

When to use it
Adaptive purposive sampling is appropriate when the research question is exploratory or when the conceptual landscape is not yet well mapped, making it likely that early data will reveal important dimensions that were not anticipated at the design stage. It is well suited to grounded theory studies, ethnographic fieldwork, and any iterative qualitative inquiry where the researcher expects initial assumptions to be challenged. Use it when flexibility to follow emerging insights is methodologically justified and when the research timeline accommodates iterative recruitment. Do not use it when a fixed, pre-registered sampling frame is required (as in some mixed-methods or evaluation designs), when gatekeepers or ethics protocols demand a fully specified participant list before data collection begins, or when the phenomenon is already well understood and deductive hypothesis-testing is the goal.

- Requires concurrent data analysis skills and the capacity to interpret emerging findings quickly enough to inform next-wave recruitment — a demanding combination of tasks.
- More difficult to pre-specify for ethics board review and grant proposals, since sampling criteria may change after approval.
- Total sample size and composition are not known in advance, which can complicate project planning and resource allocation.
- Risk of unconscious confirmation bias if criterion revisions are driven by what the researcher finds comfortable rather than what the data genuinely indicate.

How is adaptive purposive sampling different from theoretical sampling?
Both strategies are iterative and data-driven, but theoretical sampling is the specific sampling logic of grounded theory — cases are selected to develop and test emerging theoretical categories until theoretical saturation is reached. Adaptive purposive sampling is broader: it retains explicit, documented purposive criteria and revises them in response to data, but it is not limited to grounded theory and does not require the generation of a formal theory. Think of theoretical sampling as a subtype of adaptive purposive logic.
How many participants should I recruit in total?
There is no fixed number. The sample grows until thematic or theoretical saturation — when new cases add no substantively new categories. In practice, qualitative studies using this approach often end with 15–30 participants, but smaller samples are defensible in tightly scoped phenomena. More important than a number is the ability to demonstrate that saturation was systematically assessed.
Can I use this approach if my ethics approval specifies a fixed participant list?
Adaptive purposive sampling is difficult to reconcile with ethics approvals that require a fully pre-specified participant list. If your ethics board requires this, you have two options: apply for a protocol amendment when criteria change, or design the study as fixed purposive sampling and accept less flexibility. Some ethics boards will approve an iterative sampling plan if you describe the adaptation logic and the safeguards clearly.
How do I document criterion revisions for a journal submission?
Keep a sampling memo that records the initial criteria, the date and rationale for each revision, and the wave of recruitment each revision produced. In your methods section, present this as a table or narrative timeline of sampling decisions. Reviewers and readers need to be able to follow the evolution of your sample to evaluate whether it is analytically justified.
Is adaptive purposive sampling appropriate for mixed-methods research?
It can be used in the qualitative strand of a mixed-methods design, particularly in exploratory sequential designs where the qualitative phase informs the quantitative instrument. However, if the quantitative phase requires a fixed, representative sample drawn before data collection begins, adaptive logic applies only to the qualitative component and the two strands must be clearly distinguished in the methods section.
