Mobile In-depth Interview — Qualitative Interviewing via Mobile Devices

A mobile in-depth interview (mIDI) is a qualitative data collection technique in which a researcher conducts an extended, exploratory conversation with a participant using a smartphone or tablet, either synchronously (voice or video call) or asynchronously (voice-message or text exchange). The approach retains the probing, open-ended character of traditional in-depth interviewing while leveraging the ubiquity and convenience of mobile technology to reach participants in naturalistic, everyday settings.

When to use it

Use a mobile in-depth interview when your research question calls for deep, exploratory qualitative data and your target participants are geographically dispersed, time-constrained, or most naturally reached via mobile devices — for example, shift workers, rural populations, adolescents, or frequent travellers. The method is also appropriate when a face-to-face or desktop-based online interview is impractical due to cost, distance, or participant preference. Do not use it when the phenomenon under study benefits from observing participants in a shared physical space (use ethnography or focus groups), when participants have unreliable mobile access, when highly sensitive material requires a private, controlled environment, or when structured quantitative measurement is the goal.

Strengths
  • Reaches participants in their natural everyday environment, producing contextually rich accounts unavailable in a formal interview room.
  • Reduces geographic and logistical barriers, enabling access to hard-to-reach or widely dispersed populations.
  • Asynchronous voice- or text-message formats allow participants to reflect before responding, sometimes yielding more considered answers than real-time interviews.
  • Flexible scheduling around participants' own timetables increases willingness to participate and reduces attrition.
  • Lower cost per interview compared with in-person fieldwork when participants are spread across multiple locations.
Limitations
  • Audio or video quality depends on participants' network connectivity and device quality, which can impede recording and transcription.
  • Rapport-building is harder without physical co-presence, particularly for sensitive or emotionally charged topics.
  • Researchers cannot observe the full non-verbal context (body language, setting details) available in face-to-face interviews.
  • Participants without reliable mobile data access or sufficient digital literacy may be systematically excluded, introducing sampling bias.
  • Data security and participant confidentiality require careful attention when audio or video passes through commercial mobile platforms.

How does a mobile in-depth interview differ from a regular online in-depth interview?

An online in-depth interview typically implies a desktop or laptop video call (e.g., Zoom on a computer). A mobile in-depth interview specifically uses a smartphone or tablet as the primary device, which enables naturalistic, on-the-go participation and opens the option of asynchronous voice-message formats not commonly used on desktop platforms. The analytic approach is identical; the difference lies in the modality and the flexibility it affords.

Can I use WhatsApp or similar consumer apps for mobile in-depth interviews?

Consumer messaging apps are widely used in practice, but researchers must carefully evaluate data-privacy implications before using them. End-to-end encryption reduces interception risk, but audio may be stored on participants' devices or the platform's servers. Institutional ethics boards often require a privacy impact assessment and explicit participant acknowledgement of the platform's data practices.

How many participants do I need?

The sample-size logic follows standard qualitative interviewing norms: purposive sampling to representational diversity, with data collection continuing until thematic saturation. For a focused phenomenon, 10–20 participants typically suffices; if the study spans multiple subgroups or contexts, 20–30 may be needed. The mobile format does not in itself change the saturation criterion.

Is asynchronous voice-message interviewing as valid as a live call?

Asynchronous voice-message interviewing has been defended methodologically as yielding comparably rich data for many topics, with the added benefit that participants can respond when they are ready rather than under the pressure of a live exchange. However, the researcher cannot probe in real time, so the interview guide must anticipate likely directions and include prompts that can be sent as follow-up messages. For emotionally sensitive topics, a live synchronous call is generally preferable.

How do I handle poor audio quality in recordings?

Preventive measures — asking participants to find a quiet space, use earphones, and ensure a strong signal before beginning — are the most effective strategy. If recording quality is poor, ask the participant to repeat key passages and note the issue in your methodological memo. Professional transcription services trained in difficult audio, or AI-assisted transcription tools followed by manual correction, can help recover usable text from imperfect recordings.
